The Spirituality of the Coronavirus

Anything that is mysterious, unseen, intangible and unknown is God. And if we indeed are able to embrace this perspective in relationship to the horrific coronavirus pandemic, we, then, have to understand that this COVID-19 is the veritable God itself. What an unsettling thought that this pandemic which is spreading globally and taking the lives of the young, the old, the rich, the poor, the Black, the White, the Brown, is God itself. Yes, God is Generation, Birth, Creativity but what about the understanding that God is also Death and Destruction? God gives us our precious life, which we, conveniently, forget will one day dissolve into Death. We come from the Unknown (God) and one day — although no one knows that saddening day — we will go back into the Unknown (God). Even still, it is arousing to be enlivened to the reality that the “D” of God stands for Death and Destruction.
I, honestly, query if it is appropriate to label the pandemic a revolution, taking into consideration how the media, actually, has referred to the virus as a threat, the enemy. Is the word “revolution” so farfetched when we acknowledge how the Universal consciousness, some Energetic Force, seemingly, is evoking a new way of being in the world? We now must publicly wear masks as we employ social distancing. Our former paradigm is being drastically revamped as we cannot just frolic at the beaches, run in the parks, or casually, get our haircut. Revolutionary!! And as we avail ourselves to the concept of being in the thrust of a revolution, we can more readily understand how death will rear its unwelcome head; obviously, the case as we daily mourn the loss of precious significant others.
The main reason this virus is so frightening is that we have no control. Indeed, we are being directed to seek safety within the confines of our homes. The media consistently displays images of medical workers wearing protective, armored gear; individuals stricken by the virus fighting for their lives on ventilators while we listen to stories of beatific individuals whose lives have suddenly ended. There is no vaccine. And even though the statistic is that 80 percent of those who contract COVID-19 will recover, our Psyche remains cautious as we know not who suddenly will be in battle with this invisible adversary.
Within modern day society, often we get so wrapped up in mundane activities that we unconsciously ignore Spirit. We get so busy, that we fail to meditate, pray, engage in reverie, frequent places of worship, go on nature walks and/or read spiritual literature. Basically, we forfeit opportunities to give homage to Spirit. We lose focus and as a dear friend of mine used to say, do “stuff.” Presently, I am proffering the premise that when primary focus is on Matter while giving little attention to Spirit — the true essence of Life — we are alerted to push the reset button.
We have been so engaged in the busy-ness of life that now our businesses have been given a respite. The message is that we are to go home and go within. Nonetheless, we are “not” prescribing to the ideology that God is attacking us. No, that is not the case. Rather allow us to entertain the possibility that in failing to acknowledge the God within, perhaps an imbalance has occurred without.
With the onslaught of the pandemic, are we being asked to more consciously focus on spirituality? Must we begin to daily direct energy to Spirit to guide and protect us? Must we acknowledge the real life as we learn to deeply breathe and engage in spiritual/spirited activities (yoga, meditation, Chi Gong, Tai Chi, etc.) that are life-affirming? Must we strengthen our immune system and begin to worship the body as the temple of God while we maintain its well-being as best we can? Can we as a global unit bow to a Higher Understanding as we put an end to this present pandemic?
Just think, if we would have had leaders in the American government so spiritually tuned-in that they would have acted sooner with a strategy to protect the public. The White House took three weeks before action was taken while even declaring on January 22, 2020, “We have it totally under control. It’s one person coming from China and we have it under control…it’s going to be just fine.” Our former leaders protected us from Ebola, MERS. And now we, in a negative manner, embody a country that is a World leader as we have almost three times more reported cases of the virus than any other country, notwithstanding almost three times as many deaths.
In listening to the experts within the medical field, I have learned that 49 percent of the deaths have been within skilled nursing facilities. Sad for us the living but from the perspective of those whose souls have been freed, I wonder if it is a welcome relief of renewed life. Many of our elderly are laying in beds with weakened immune systems while being visited occasionally. Do they feel as if they have been discarded?
From the perspective of Higher Consciousness, there is no such thing as Death, for the soul is Eternal. It is ascertained that the body is a quarter of an ounce lighter at death — that is because the soul which has been freed is believed to weigh a quarter of an ounce. We abhor Death. And as sad as it is for us to mourn those who have passed on, allow us to consider that evolution has occurred, just as someday we, too, will evolve into the Unknown — it is just that our day has not come.
I realize I have said some things that require contemplation. Digest this and await the next upcoming article, “The Physical Impact of the Coronavirus,” on within “The Corona Series.”
